For the most part I'm really okay that I didn't end up in Paris this long weekend (that post and explanation coming tomorrow).

But for my eyes.

But for the feast my eyes would've beheld.

And the weight of the camera in my hands as I beheld it.

Does that make sense?

There are so many ways we feed ourselves, I believe that. And just as our bodies are primed (and need) to eat a variety of things...I think the eyes need the same. The architecture, the paintings, the small neighborhoods and cobble stone streets, my eyes were hungry for Paris. My body was craving the experience of the city.

But Paris will wait; it has to.

When it became clear the trip was not happening, or rather, that it would happen without me, I called my very best friends here in the city and asked them to play tourist with me. I wanted to do something in New York that would in some way mimic my derailed Parisian adventure.

The Met came to mind.

It's one of the most visited tourist attraction, and while I--yes--tend to shy away from visiting such places (or even suggesting them), on this front I absolutely concede: the Met is worth the visit.

The building itself is a stunner. The galleries are well curated and the artwork is, of course, tremendous. So go. Really, go.

And after, turn the corner on 86th and grab a delicious meal or snack at Cafe Sabarsky (inspired by turn of the century Viennese cafes) in the Neue Galerie. There is an upstairs and downstairs to this establishment--the upstairs while admittedly more aesthetically appealing has the wait time to go along with it. It's not inexpensive, but it's a fun and interesting New York experience.

vinegar hill, brooklyn

i've been needing a little getaway.

in fact, i'm probably about a month past needing-a-getaway-from-new-york.

but it hasn't been in the cards.

however, yesterday, finding myself with the task of revealing the-off-the-beaten-path-new-york, i knew just where to go.

there is something about the tiny neighborhood of vinegar hill, brooklyn that feels undisturbed--old and historic and quiet. an escape. like it's closer to the sky than the earth.

it was just as good as the three of us needed--and hoped--it would be.

(and the company wasn't so bad either. turns out the dutch could teach lessons in what-it-is-to-be-chivalrous).

MY NEW YORK + ROUND THESE PARTS

there's not too much to report on this end. life has been... a little unclear and a little uneasy and quite a bit of leaning into the unknown.
but okay.
life has been okay--both because of and despite all those many murky things.
though i must admit  i do believe the winter blues stole upon me these last few weeks and i can feel my body craving spring, calling out for the green that heralds the season. i love my neighborhood always, but never quite so much as when it is flush with green and the birds sing that morning song.

WHERE TO EAT IN NYC | brunch at buttermilk channel

It took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that BRUNCH IS A THING here in New York. I've never been a big breakfast food person, so I was slow to the party. But after nine years here (oh, my, good. lord) I came round. And now I'm finally coming to terms with the fact that I mostly always want the sweet stuff--french toast, pancakes, and the like--and if that's what I really want, then I should just go ahead and get it.

Buttermilk Channel is one of my absolute favorite places to go. I've gone more times than I should probably admit. It's a go-to for everything from dates to my mother visiting town. When I'm there for dinner I am helpless against the charms of the cheese plate, the jalepeno cornbread, and the ribs.

This snow-bound weekend I gave their brunch a go...and oh.my.it.was.just... so good.
I got the pecan pie french toast with a side of sausage (balancing savory and sweet is the first rule of brunch) and then dipped in several times to the eggs across the table.

This is all to say...when in New York (well, Brooklyn, actually) and out to brunch, Buttermilk Channel may just be my new favorite place. ever. Ever, ever.
